“Once in a blue moon' is not just a phrase we use for those
occasional events.
It’s a rare statistical event which occurs when a full moon
occurs twice in a calendar month.
And today is the day, when for the first time in two n half years,
we will be treated to our second full moon in August, thanks to the moon last
reaching its peak on August 2.
Look up to the sky;
You’ll be seeing the first 'blue moon' since March 2010, and
the last one until July 2015.
Wait!
Don't expect to see the moon blue in color. A blue moon
refers to the rarity of multiple full moons in a month or season.
This tradition of calling the second full moon of a month a
blue moon was thought to have started about four hundred years ago.
However, there have been occasions when the Moon has really
appeared to be blue. This isn't an astronomical phenomenon. Instead, it is
caused by high dust or smoke in the Earth's atmosphere, due to major volcanic eruptions
and large forest fires.
So,
don’t expect the moon to turn blue tonight, just imagine it is blue and wink, in
memory of Neil Armstrong!
