Court declares Samsung a Copy Cat

A year long dispute between Samsung and Apple in a court in San Jose California has come to an end, as a nine-member jury has decided that Samsung did copy some of  the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

Samsung is ordered to pay a huge sum of $ 1.05 billion as damages to Apple.

Samsung will walk away empty handed as the seven men and two women jury rejected Samsung's countersuit.

Jurors also decided against some of Apple's claims involving the two dozen Samsung devices at issue, declining to award the full $2.5 billion Apple demanded.

The Samsung devices affected include the Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, Nexus S, Mesmerize, Vibrant, Fascinate, Skyrocket, Continuum, Prevail, Infuse, Gem, Mesmerize, Indulge, Replenish, Epic 4G Touch and Droid Charge smartphones and the Galaxy Tab and Tab 10.1 tablets, among others. It’s not yet known what the fate of the infringing products will be.

Samsung's reaction:

Samsung said the verdict should be viewed "as a loss for the American consumer."

"It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices," the company said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies".

Apple's reaction:

Apple praised the court for "sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right."

"The mountain of evidence presented during the trial showed that Samsung's copying went far deeper than even we knew," the company said in a statement.

Samsung to challenge this verdict:

Samsung has decided to challenge this verdict. Samsung's spokesperson said that "We will move immediately to file post-verdict motions to overturn this decision in this court and if we are not successful, we will appeal this decision to the Court of Appeals".

"This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple's claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer".

So, the dispute between Samsung and Apple is not even close to finish. As the counter-filing will drag on for years, and years, but Apple has drawn big blood.

  1. Apple is exaggerating things, It is fearing that android market will take over its own. Apple has got almost patents for silly thing like pinch zoom, slide unlock etc.
I would request TechStrip to elaborate on the Patents Samsung is accused to have copied.
